Shipping Ports:

Major shipping ports in Belgium are Port of Antwerp and Zeebrugge.

Left-Hand Drive Vehicles:

Importation of left hand drive vehicles is allowed in the country.

Inspection

Used vehicles imported in the country are subjected to road-worthiness test, except if the importer is the owner abroad (Importer’s name should be on Foreign Registration Certificate).

Documents Required:

  • Copy of certificate of Title and Registration
  • Original Purchase Invoice
  • Original Bill of Lading
  • Certificate of insurance valid for at least 6 months prior to arrival in Belgium.
  • Drivers License & International Insurance Policy (green card)
  • License Plate - keeping origin plates allows vehicle to be driven pending naturalization
  • Form IM/EU 4 - agreement not to dispose of the vehicle within 12 months of importation
  • Documents proving shipper has resided outside of Belgium for at least 12 months and that the shipper is transferring normal residence to Belgium.
  • The original foreign attestation of registration, or complete and original foreign certificate of registration.

Taxation in Belgium

Used vehicle imported in Belgium is subjected to duties and taxes. Import duties are calculated on the basis of the customs value and vehicle type. And VAT of 21% of the sum of the customs value, the import duties and any extra fees is also charged.

Exemption from customs duties and VAT is given on bringing a vehicle into Belgium from outside the EU as part of personal and household effects provided the owner must have lived outside the EU for at least the previous twelve months, have bought the car outside the EU and have driven it for at least six months prior to arrival, have already paid the VAT equivalent in another country, and must subsequently keep the vehicle for personal use for a minimum of twelve months following import.

Registration of vehicle

After customs clearance, application form for registration is given to the importer. The registration form should be sent to the Vehicle Registration Service (DIV) accompanied by the original foreign registration certificate and a copy of the purchase receipt.
