Shipping Ports:

Provide Cars exports into all the major ports of Bermuda (Freeport, Hamilton and St George). The general shipping method is RORO (roll-on, roll-off) although the more expensive shipping method of containers can be arranged on request.

Pre-shipping requirements:

No extra inspections are required after purchasing and before exporting to Bermuda. Provide Cars arranges the standard export procedures (deregistration/export certificate) for Bermudan customers.

Importing is a regulatory process, each country has its own rules and regulation regarding this. These rules are based on the type of terrain, roads of the concern country and environment. Likewise, Bermuda which is a caribbean country also have it regulations, which importers must have to adhere used vehicle in the country.

For importing a vehicle in Bermuda:

You must be the first owner and should have owned the vehicle for not more than six months prior to the date of the shipment to Bermuda. Vehicles which had more than one owner cannot be imported into Bermuda. This includes demonstration models (demos), which are considered used.

Before importing a vehicle:

Before importing any vehicle into Bermuda, you need to contact Transport Control Department (TCD) of the specific make and model, vehicle specifications including length and width, weights, engine size and horsepower to approve the import.

Documents Required:

You must provide the following documents before you import a vehicle

  • Bill of Sale
  • Certification of Title
  • Overseas vehicle registration (private cars or motorcycles) or a letter of approval for import (motor taxis)
  • Owner’s handbook and vehicle brochure
  • Emissions Certificate

Note: All documents provided will be returned to you.

If you are wishing to import a used car for personal use then it must have following specification:

  • Maximum length of 175 inches
  • Maximum width of 71 inches
  • Maximum engine capacity of 2,500 cubic centimeters
  • Maximum power to weight ratio of 10.5 kilograms per kilowatt

Bermuda Tariffs:

  • For the collection of custom tariffs the Bermuda uses the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System 2012.
  • Bermuda’s Customs Department collects import duty, which makes up approximately twenty percent of the GOB’s revenue.
  • Their valuation rule for valuing imported goods for duty purpose has adopted from World Trade Organisation’s valuation rules.
  • Customs duty is normally calculated on an ad valorem basis, generally on the transaction value of imported goods.
  • Vehicles principally designed for the transport of passengers are normally dutiable at the rate of 75 percent on the first $10,000 and 150 percent on the value in excess of $10,000 (vehicles with ten or more seats and hybrid vehicles are at 33.5 percent).
  • Vehicles principally designed for the transport of goods are normally dutiable at 33.5 percent. The duty on motorcycles is 33.5 percent.

Weekly exchange rates for Importer:

All importers must use the current exchange rates for the conversion of foreign currency into terms of Bermuda dollars when determining the customs value of goods imported during the period indicated.

Exemption from duty when moving to Bermuda:

The returning residents and non-residents at certain circumstances may be entitled to duty free on their used motor vehicle. If you are a returning resident you will need proof that you have been living overseas for more than one year.

If you are a first-time resident, you will need

  • Proof that you have permission to live in Bermuda (work permit, spousal letter etc).
  • Proof that your vehicle are older than six months if claiming relief.

If you are shipping your used car from overseas and claiming relief, you will need a copy of your Transfer of Residence Certificate. You must ask a customs officer for this certificate at the airport, when you arrive to take up residence. There is no fee for the certificate. This certificate is processed immediately.
