Shipping Ports:

Major shipping ports in Bulgaria are Port of Burgas, Port of Sofia.

Left-Hand Drive Vehicles:

Importation of left hand drive vehicles is allowed in the country.

Inspection

Vehicles imported from outside EU need to be inspected before they gets registered.


Documents Required:

  • Passport (copy)
  • Proof of ownership (original title of vehicle)
  • Purchase invoice (must be owner's property for more than six months)
  • Proforma-Invoice (prepared by origin agent)
  • EUR 1 Certificate
  • Foreign registration card
  • Visa
  • Driver's license
  • Proof of insurance

Customs regulations in Bulgaria:

Temporary importation of used vehicles is allowed only for six months. A foreign imported car can only be used by a person who has a written permission, by the government of the country.

If a car is imported from a country outside the EU or EEA, you will need to pay import tariff and VAT. The import tariff in Bulgaria is 10% and the VAT is 20%.

Duty free importation of vehicle by citizen of Bulgaria is allowed if the person has owed the car for a period of more than six months and the car has been driven more than 6,000 kilometers. Non-residents of Bulgaria have to pay import duty on the car.

Import duty is to be paid on vehicles imported outside the EU. An environmental tax called eco-tax (Eco-Tax) must be paid for all cars imported from outside the EU. The amount paid depends on the age of the vehicle it applies to all vehicles.

Vehicle Registration:

Following documents are required for registering vehicle:

  • Proof of identity
  • Original receipt/bill of sale
  • Proof of residency or employment contract
  • A valid roadworthiness certificate
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Receipts proving that Bulgarian vehicle tax have been paid. The amount paid depends on the age and model of the car
  • Proof of minimum third party insurance
  • Proof of payment of customs duty for non EU/EEA vehicles

Note: A private vehicle may be temporarily imported and used on Bulgarian roads for up to six months as long as the vehicle has a minimum third party insurance policy. A ‘used’ car is more than six months old and has been driven more than 6 000 km.
