Shipping Ports:

Major shipping ports for used vehicles in Egypt are El Iskandariya (Alexandria), Port Said and Damietta.

Right-hand drive vehicles:

Only right hand drive cars are allowed in the country. Importation of diesel vehicles is strictly prohibited in the country.

Importing A Vehicle:

Each country has different rules and regulations when it comes to the importation of motor vehicles. If you’re hoping to take your vehicle with you when you relocate to Egypt, take some time to familiarize yourself with these regulations so that you can be prepared when it’s time to relocate overseas with your vehicle:

  • All vehicles being imported into Egypt are subject to high taxes and duties.
  • Vehicles must be new - no used vehicles may be imported to Egypt; vehicles must be made the same year of importation and the customer importing it must be the original owner of the vehicle.
  • All diesel vehicles are prohibited.
  • Customers must receive prior authorization before importing a vehicle of any kind - consult with your destination agent prior to importation. Banning the importation of motorcycles and three-wheel vehicles, except for tricycles and chassis for trade.

Duties and Taxes:

  • Customs duty between 40 percent and 135 percent.
  • Tax varies between 10 percent and 35 percent.

Duty Free Importation:

  • Expatriates working within the Egyptian Government sector are allowed to import vehicle duty free, provided they must guarantee re-exportation of the vehicle.
  • Expatriates working for non-governmental sector are allowed to import a vehicle duty free only if the expatriate is the owner or partner of a private company/project in Egypt. In this case, duty can be covered with local bank guarantee.
  • Requirements are: proof of ownership/partnership from Egyptian Investment Authority, company commercial registration documents, and taxation documents.
  • Trip ticket system allows free import for maximum period of 6 months, provided submitting trip ticket documentation and plates. Once the period of 6 months is over, the vehicle should be exported for at least 6 months before shipping back to Egypt again. Licensing fees is only applicable on these vehicles.
